An up close and personal with your favorite animal A leisurely afternoon was spent at the Crocodylus Park on a beautiful July day in Darwin. We began by exploring the showroom, positioned in a gorgeous tropical setting. The showroom and cafe’ offer a huge range of crocodile related products, from fashionable belts and bags to burgers and BBQ packs!! The owner/biologist Professor Grahame Webb and his fabulous team briefed us about the important work the park carries out. Grahame has been studying crocodiles since 1970 and plays a huge part in the conversation and management of wildlife and is considered a leading authority on crocodilian research. The research component of the park has helped protect the species world wide. Crocodylus Park Crocs galore The large range of unique animals and birds within the tropical lush, landscaped park is incredible. Walking along the boardwalk above the crocodile enclosures we could examine these astonishing creatures with their prehistoric features, at close range. We noticed their beady eyes watching our every move. They also house alligators, as well as Australian and New Guinea freshwater crocodiles. The charismatic ostriches, full of personality, were cheekily poking their heads up and over the wire fence to say hello. There are also emus, burdekin ducks, curlews and iguanas. The meerkats were mesmerizing. These guys were busy taking it in turns to stand guard, constantly communicating with each other, darting back and forth. You could watch them all day. The monkeys were extremely cute, and energetic!! The fascinating little marmosets were definitely a highlight and hand feeding them comes highly recommended. They took such delight in selecting and crunching their dinner (tasty meal worms), with their tiny little fingers. Then there was the lions……WOW the lions! For instance, their beauty is breathtaking. Witnessing them being hand fed (which …Read More
Wallaroo All day Litchfield National Park and Crocodile Cruise. From the time we were picked up the tour guide was welcoming and gave so much information about Darwin’s unique history. On the way to the Crocodile Jumping Cruise we were given information about the changing environment, the changing seasons and the variety of wild life we might see along the way to Litchfield National Park. When we arrived at the site for the Crocodile Jumping Cruise we were greeted by a truly unique character with a knife and a gun on his belt which made us feel a little anxious. The tour guide assured us it was only a precaution and would give us all the information and instructions to ensure our safety. We were given a brief run down of the life and behaviors of crocodiles their nesting habits and their diet. Our walk to the boat was through the mangroves and we were told to walk across the boardwalk to the boat in pairs for our safety. Once on the water it didn’t take long for the crocodiles to realise it was time for small snack of chicken. I had to have my camera ready and took so many photos as the crocodiles were very fast at snapping that snack off the pole, while all the time the guide was giving us some amazing information. We even were lucky enough to see a female crocodile with one of her babies. Back on the Bus Back on the bus we were given many comfort stops, one being the Humpty Doo Hotel. A very iconic hotel with character and a souvenir shop and of course time for a cold beer. On the road to Litchfield National Park our driver was giving us history on the township of Batchelor and the …Read More

Kakadu Highlights Kakadu? Mad if you don’t! With 5 days off we decided to take a trip to check out the Kakadu Highlights. Given it’s toward the end of the dry, we weren’t sure how it would be. In one word ‘Spectacular’. We were late arriving and spent our first night at Cooinda Lodge Campground and thought we’d treat ourselves to dinner at the bar. Surprised at the cost of the meals, no pub meals here, but the food was beautiful. An early rise to head out to Gunlom. About an hours drive and then about 40kms of dirt. At the end of that road you’ll find a lovely shady picnic area and the most beautiful swimming hole. The water clear and so refreshing, the bottom sandy. Starts shallow and gradually gets deeper. The waterfall was only trickling but just so beautiful. Could have stayed for days. It gets better. The crystal clear rock pools at the top of Gunlom falls were an amazing treat after the goat track trek up the hill and definitely one of the best Kakadu highlights for us. A little challenging with all the rocks and it’s quite steep but took us about 25 mins with a couple of stops. So worth it! The pools are so awesome for swimming and you can get the most stunning photographs in the infinity pool with amazing views. You’ll never want to leave this paradise. Maguk for the night You can camp at Gunlom but we chose to head back to Maguk to set up camp. This is about 10klms of dirt from the highway and plenty of shady spots. Honesty box for camp fees and first in best dressed. The next morning we headed out to Maguk gorge. Another goat track where you are mostly scrambling over …Read More
